After facing criticism for several weeks, the Government has reversed its stance on digital ID, opting for a more relaxed approach. Labour minister Heidi Alexander announced that digital ID or other forms of digital documentation, like a biometric passport chip, will now be accepted for right-to-work checks. Previously, the Government had proposed a mandatory identification card for individuals seeking employment in the UK.

Alexander emphasized that progress is being made but acknowledged that change will require time. She confirmed the commitment to mandatory digital right-to-work checks, clarifying that individuals may use government-provided digital IDs on their phones or biometric chips in passports for verification.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves expressed flexibility regarding the type of digital documentation accepted for proving the right to work, stating that e-visas, e-passports, or digital ID cards are all viable options. Support for digital ID cards has fluctuated, dropping from 35% to -14% following Keir Starmer’s announcement of the plans.

Despite public opposition, Starmer pledged to move forward with the controversial digital ID initiative, highlighting its potential benefits, such as facilitating age verification for alcohol purchases and simplifying administrative processes for students. Originally intended to combat illegal working, the digital ID proposal sparked concerns about civil liberties, state surveillance, and data privacy.

Critics, including Silki Carlo from Big Brother Watch, criticized the government’s handling of the digital ID policy, deeming it “irrecoverable.” A forthcoming consultation will seek feedback on digital ID cards, which would be stored on smartphones in the GOV.UK wallet app to streamline verification processes for employers and landlords. The digital IDs aim to enhance efficiency in verifying individuals’ right to reside and work in the UK by cross-referencing against a central database.
