Shamima Begum may soon be released from a detention center in Syria due to ongoing violent conflicts in the northeast region. The now 26-year-old had left the UK in 2015 at the age of 15 to join ISIS and was subsequently stripped of her British citizenship. She is currently situated in the al-Roj camp within the area.

A recent ceasefire agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has resulted in the government gaining significant control over the country, dismantling the Kurdish-led forces that had dominated the northeast for more than a decade. This agreement follows heightened tensions between government forces and the SDF, culminating in a significant easternward push.

There are apprehensions regarding the government’s intentions to secure prisons in the vicinity, with the SDF expressing concerns about potential security risks that could destabilize the region and foster a resurgence of chaos and terrorism. Reportedly, around 10 British men, 20 women, and 40 children are believed to be held in these facilities.

Legal representatives for Begum have taken her case to the European Court of Human Rights, seeking clarification from the UK regarding the citizenship revocation. Begum, who departed the UK at 15 and lost her citizenship in February 2019 due to perceived national security threats following her marriage to an IS combatant, is contesting the decision under the European Convention on Human Rights, specifically Article 4 prohibiting slavery and forced labor.

The case was filed in December 2024 after her unsuccessful attempts to challenge the citizenship removal at the UK’s Supreme Court. Notably, judges in Strasbourg have posed several questions to the Home Office, including whether due consideration was given to Begum’s potential status as a trafficking victim before the citizenship deprivation decision.

In response to these developments, Birnberg Peirce Solicitors, representing Begum, emphasized the significance of addressing the complexities raised in the case that had been previously overlooked or disregarded by UK authorities. Former attorney general Dominic Grieve has argued that the UK bears responsibility for Begum’s situation, while a Government source affirmed the Home Secretary’s commitment to defending the citizenship revocation decision in the interest of national security.

Recent events indicate that the SDF has notably retreated after initial confrontations in eastern Aleppo province, following an order from Syria’s Defense Ministry to halt fighting at the front lines post the ceasefire announcement. Despite changes in leadership since the ousting of Bashar Assad in December 2024, Syria continues to grapple with asserting full control over the nation.

While an agreement in March aimed to merge the SDF with Damascus, operational challenges emerged as both sides accused each other of treaty violations. The government has since made significant strides in reclaiming control over critical provinces previously held by the SDF, including Deir el-Zour and Raqqa, encompassing strategic resources such as oil and gas fields, river dams along the Euphrates, and border crossings.
