Dennis Taylor has shared a heartfelt tribute to the late snooker icon John Virgo. The renowned Virgo passed away at 79 years old earlier this month. Virgo initially gained fame as a player, clinching the 1979 UK Championship title, before transitioning into a prominent broadcaster. He was a familiar face on BBC’s snooker broadcasts and gained further recognition for his involvement in the popular show Big Break.
Taylor, a fellow snooker legend, worked closely with Virgo on various projects, including providing commentary during notable moments in snooker history, such as Ronnie O’Sullivan’s record-breaking performance at the 1997 World Snooker Championship. Virgo, known as the authoritative voice of snooker for nearly four decades, tragically passed away on February 4 in Spain due to a ruptured aorta. Taylor paid his respects to his dear friend during the BBC’s coverage of the Welsh Open.
In his tribute, Taylor described Virgo as a talented showman, commentator, and entertainer, emphasizing their longstanding friendship and shared passion for commentary. Reflecting on their entertaining styles and successful collaborations, Taylor highlighted Virgo’s humor, impersonations, and memorable moments from their time together. Taylor expressed deep sorrow over Virgo’s passing, acknowledging his significant contributions to the snooker community and their enduring friendship.
