In recent global protests, the Iranian flag has sparked controversy. In London, a demonstrator scaled the balcony of the Iranian embassy and removed the flag, which is viewed as a symbol of the oppressive regime.
On the social media platform X, the official flag of the Islamic Republic was replaced with the pre-1979 revolution flag, known as the Shah-era “Lion-and-Sun” emblem. This historic symbol has resurfaced in Iran as a form of protest against the current repressive government.
The platform-wide change on X involved replacing the post-revolution red emblem with the traditional Lion-and-Sun symbol from Iran’s monarchy era. This alteration affected all accounts associated with the Iranian state, displaying the pre-revolution symbol. The adjustment came after a user contacted the company’s product head and Elon Musk, requesting a change to the Iranian flag emoji.
Following the user’s request, Nikita Bear, the company’s representative, indicated that the change was in progress and would be implemented soon. Eventually, the Iranian government’s official accounts briefly displayed the protest flag before removing the emoji from their X account entirely.
Meanwhile, in London, a protester at the Iranian embassy tore down the national flag during an anti-regime rally. The Metropolitan Police estimated that 500 to 1,000 individuals participated in the protest in Kensington.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the importance of protecting individuals who speak out against the Iranian government, particularly against Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s regime. Cooper highlighted the need for fundamental rights such as free speech and peaceful assembly, urging Iranian authorities to heed the concerns raised by the UK, France, and Germany.
