A young individual who fled following involvement in a large family altercation in Birmingham city center has been captured and imprisoned. Thomas Sweeney junior, set for sentencing in August 2024, was part of a tumultuous incident in the Gay Village a year earlier, caught on high-resolution CCTV footage.

At the age of 18, along with his co-accused parents Ellen Sweeney and Thomas Sweeney senior, he admitted to violent disorder. They had requested a delay in court proceedings to allow him to marry first. However, on the day of sentencing, all three failed to show up and disappeared, suspected to have returned to Ireland.

More than a year later, in their absence, Judge Dean Kershaw imposed custodial sentences, with Sweeney junior receiving a sentence of two years and four months. After over 12 months on the run, Birmingham Crown Court confirmed his arrest on January 8. The authorities apprehended him following a chance encounter when Cheshire Police executed a warrant and stopped the vehicle he was driving on the M6 southbound.

Sweeney junior, speaking via video link from HMP Altcourse in Liverpool, admitted to not surrendering to bail. His defense lawyer, Queenie Djan, explained that he had initially planned to turn himself in at Stechford Police Station. However, Judge Kershaw, overseeing the case, dismissed this claim entirely.

The judge chose to exceed the typical legal guidelines for the offense, handing down an additional two-month sentence to be served consecutively with his existing 28-month term. The Sweeney family, along with other relatives, engaged in violent and drunken behavior after leaving a nightclub in the Gay Village in the early hours of July 15, 2023, resulting in assaults on multiple individuals, described by Judge Kershaw as one of the most severe brawls witnessed in the city center.

Sweeney junior was directly involved in physically attacking a man and a taxi driver during the chaotic incident. His mother, Ellen Sweeney, then 39, and father, Thomas Sweeney senior, then 43, are currently evading authorities.
