Armed police intervened to remove an irate family from a plane after they were allegedly asked to give up a business class seat for an airline staff member. Ivan Lopes, along with his wife and two daughters, encountered the incident while attempting to travel back to Brazil from Paris on an Air France flight. The family’s journey, which originated in Milan, Italy, was scheduled to continue to Salvador, Bahia state, in northeastern Brazil.
The trouble began at the Paris gate when the family, having upgraded to business class from premium economy, were informed that their upgrade for one of their daughters was not possible due to a purported “technical issue” with seat 7L. Upon boarding, they discovered that seat 7L was already occupied by a French passenger, believed to be affiliated with Air France, while the actual problematic seat was 5L. This discrepancy led to a confrontation that Mr. Lopes found embarrassing and intimidating.
Allegedly, the situation escalated, with the captain reportedly displaying aggression and a cabin crew member prohibiting filming. Subsequently, French police were summoned to escort the family off the aircraft, insisting they purchase new tickets if they intended to fly the following day. Opting to follow legal counsel, the family acquired new business class tickets on another airline, incurring additional costs and delays in baggage retrieval post-incident.
Mr. Lopes estimates the financial toll at around €16,000 (£14,000), encompassing original ticket expenses, upgrade fees, replacement flights, and supplementary expenses. The family plans to pursue legal action against Air France, contending that the airline’s actions were excessive, leading to undue distress, especially for their 11-year-old.
Air France acknowledged the family’s removal from the flight but refuted their version of events. According to the airline, the family’s behavior was disruptive and agitated, causing inconvenience, complaints from other passengers, and potential safety risks. The airline asserted that due to an inoperative business class seat, their policy allows for the cancellation of day-of-travel upgrades, offering premium economy seating as an alternative. Air France emphasized passenger and crew safety as their primary concern, justifying the group’s removal based on international regulations to maintain flight security and orderliness.
