Samsung has introduced its latest lineup of innovative foldable smartphones, potentially posing a challenge for Apple. The tech giant from Korea has revealed three new devices, with the spotlight on the brand-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a redesigned appearance.

Unlike previous Fold models, Samsung has opted for a different design approach with a shorter and wider “passport-style” design. While this may seem unconventional when closed, unfolding the device reveals a more practical shape. The device boasts a spacious 7.6-inch display that resembles a compact tablet, offering an immersive experience for activities like streaming, binge-watching, and gaming on the move.

This launch holds significance as Apple is anticipated to unveil its first foldable iPhone later this year, with rumors hinting at a similar design choice. By being ahead with this radical new look, Samsung has taken an early lead over its major competitor.

Apart from the design, Samsung is also advancing in other areas. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the thinnest and lightest Fold model to date, weighing just 180g. It features an enhanced hinge for increased durability and reduced risk of damage over time.

The device’s larger display now incorporates Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating for improved visibility outdoors. Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, the device boasts a 4,800mAh battery that can be rapidly charged to 63% in just 30 minutes.

Equipped with a dual-camera system for decent photography, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 also includes Gorilla Glass for protection against scratches and impacts. Additionally, Samsung has integrated its latest Galaxy AI tools for smarter photo editing, enhanced productivity features, and improved search functions.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced starting at £1,699 and is available for pre-order. Comparatively, Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone, expected later this year, may exceed £2,000 in cost.

In addition to the Fold 8, Samsung has launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling last year’s Fold 7 in appearance but featuring upgrades such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a major camera enhancement. The rear camera setup now boasts a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera, promising improved low-light photography and 8K video recording.

The Fold 8 Ultra incorporates a new Flex Titanium hinge and refined display structure for enhanced strength. Samsung claims to have minimized the crease and improved the unfolding mechanism for a smoother experience. With a larger 5,000mAh battery offering extended usage, the device can reach a 67% charge in about 30 minutes.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is priced starting at £1,899. Completing the lineup is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, maintaining Samsung’s popular clamshell design but now thinner and lighter than ever. Improvements include an upgraded external cover display, a more robust aluminium hinge, faster performance, and enhanced camera capabilities.

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 starts at £1,149.
