An incident involving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) has resulted in the vehicle veering off the road on a busy stretch of motorway, leading to significant traffic disruptions in the vicinity.

According to traffic monitoring system Inrix, all traffic on the M1 was temporarily halted due to the accident that occurred on the southbound side at junction 35 on the A629 Cowley Hill in Rotherham.

At 11 am today, traffic came to a standstill, and the entry slip road at junction 35 was closed. Drivers have been advised to steer clear of the area as emergency crews are actively addressing the aftermath of the HGV collision.

The cleanup operation following the crash is anticipated to extend past midnight, as per the agency’s estimation.

National Highways has announced that normal traffic flow is anticipated to resume between 3:00 pm and 3:15 pm as all lanes on the M1 southbound have been reopened.

Currently, the entry slip at J35 remains shut in the southbound direction, with an expected clearance time between 7:45 pm and 8:00 pm.

Traffic England has indicated that the incident on the slip road and the lane closure on the M1 southbound are both projected to be resolved between 6:30 pm and 6:45 pm.

National Highways has revised the expected clearance time for the incident to be between 4:30 pm and 4:45 pm, delaying the reopening by an additional hour.

Delays of approximately 30 minutes beyond the usual traffic flow are still being reported by the alerts service.

With three out of four lanes now operational, traffic movement has significantly improved, with only a small portion experiencing slow-moving traffic.

The M1 southbound entry slip at junction J35 is currently inaccessible due to a vehicle accident, with both lanes closed and an expected clearance time between 2:15 pm and 2:30 pm.

Furthermore, one of the four lanes on the M1 southbound between junctions J35 and J34 is closed, resulting in delays of approximately 30 minutes compared to normal traffic flow. The resolution is expected between 3:30 pm and 3:45 pm today.

The M1 Southbound entry slip road closure due to the HGV accident at J35 A629 Cowley Hill in Rotherham has caused extensive delays, with congestion extending to J36 (Barnsley South/ Hoyland).

Following a 40-minute road closure, lane one on the main carriageway is now reopened after a temporary blockage. However, the entry slip remains shut since around 11:00 am.

South Yorkshire Police have confirmed responding to an incident involving an HGV leaving the carriageway on the M1 southbound near J35. The southbound carriageway is currently closed, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.
