France’s navy, with the assistance of British intelligence, has intercepted an oil tanker believed to be violating international sanctions while sailing from Russia. The vessel, named the Grinch, was suspected of operating under a false flag and was halted in the Mediterranean Sea. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the operation, stating that it was conducted in accordance with international maritime laws. The ship, flying a false flag from the Comoros islands with an Indian crew, was taken to port for further inspection.
The interception is part of a broader effort by France and other nations to combat the illicit activities of a “shadow fleet” of over 400 oil tankers evading sanctions. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has expressed readiness for British armed forces to support allies in intercepting vessels linked to the Russian “ghost fleet.” Recent collaboration between British and US forces in raiding a Russian tanker has raised discussions on the legal framework for such actions.
