The labor union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet has officially given a 72-hour strike notice, potentially leading to a strike during the busy summer travel season. The Canadian Union of Public Employees stated that significant differences persist between the two parties on key matters.

Alia Hussain, the chair of the union’s WestJet section, emphasized the necessity for changes and expressed efforts made to secure a fair agreement. Hussain underscored that there is still an opportunity to avert a strike, highlighting ongoing negotiations around the clock to resolve the issues.

WestJet, in response to the union’s strike notice, issued a 72-hour lockout notice. The air carrier, Canada’s second-largest, is actively engaged in negotiations to achieve a resolution. WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers and the uncertainty resulting from the situation.

In the event of no deal, job action could commence as early as Sunday at 12:01 a.m. MT. While the union’s notice does not automatically trigger a strike, preparations for potential action are underway. WestJet has allowed passengers with flights scheduled between July 30 and August 4 to make changes or cancel without fees.

The ongoing dispute centers on various issues, including unpaid ground duties, as highlighted by the union. WestJet contends that all duties are compensated through a credit hour system, rather than an hourly wage. The parties have also established protocols on how to manage flight disruptions and crew logistics in the event of a work stoppage.

Amidst the negotiations, both sides are aware of the financial implications of a possible shutdown, especially during a peak travel period like a long weekend. WestJet operates a substantial number of daily flights, transporting thousands of passengers regularly.
