Russia’s top court has ruled to exclude the sole opposition party that opposes the Kremlin’s military involvement in Ukraine from the upcoming parliamentary election. The Supreme Court invalidated the registration of Yabloko, which translates to “apple” in Russian, following a petition from a pro-Kremlin party. Initially, the Central Election Commission had permitted Yabloko to run in the election alongside 10 other parties.
Yabloko, once a prominent liberal voice critical of the government, lost its parliamentary seats in the State Duma as the Kremlin solidified its control over Russian politics. The party, known for its anti-war stance against sending troops to Ukraine, used campaign slogans advocating for a ceasefire, diplomacy, peace, and a Russia free from fear and political repression.
Grigory Yavlinsky, a veteran liberal politician and co-founder of Yabloko, expressed disappointment over the court’s decision and announced plans to appeal. Yavlinsky emphasized that excluding Yabloko from the election signifies a reluctance by the authorities to engage with those challenging the status quo.
Numerous Russian opposition figures in exile, such as Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, as well as politicians Ilya Yashin and Vladimir Kara-Murza, had urged support for Yabloko due to its anti-war stance. Despite attempts to distance itself from support by Kremlin critics abroad, Yabloko faced scrutiny from Kremlin-aligned parties for its position on Ukraine.
The Motherland Party initiated the lawsuit leading to Yabloko’s removal from the ballot, alleging copyright infringement, exceeding campaign spending limits, and promoting ideas contrary to Russia’s territorial integrity. Yabloko’s representatives and lawyers refuted these accusations during the Supreme Court proceedings.
Yabloko’s campaign for peace resonated with the public, challenging the Kremlin’s narrative and highlighting the demand for peace and freedom in Russia. The party’s removal from the ballot is viewed as a response to the threat it poses to the government’s policies on Ukraine.
The crackdown on Yabloko members, including imprisonment and designation as “foreign agents,” reflects the escalating pressure faced by the party amid the Kremlin’s tightening grip on dissent. Key members have been targeted through legal proceedings and restrictions, further limiting the party’s representation in the political landscape.
