The experienced defensive back is leading Canada’s national women’s team in the 2026 world championship with hopes of clinching a gold medal and securing a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where flag football will make its Olympic debut.
Gervais expressed her excitement, stating, “It would be realizing a dream I would’ve never dreamt before.” Despite never previously considering the Olympics, she now sees a good chance as long as she maintains her health and leadership for the team.
The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championship is set to kick off in Düsseldorf, Germany, with Canada scheduled to face Panama, Brazil, and Japan in their initial matches. The top two teams will earn direct Olympic berths, with a possible third spot if the United States reaches the gold-medal game due to their host status.
Canada, a strong contender for gold in Germany, earned their spot in the world championship after finishing as runners-up in last year’s IFAF Americas Continental championship. Reflecting on their journey, Gervais remains optimistic, particularly about a potential rematch with Mexico, the team that defeated them in the previous tournament.
Gervais, a 36-year-old from Maskinonge, Que., has been balancing her football career with motherhood and a full-time job as an osteopath and kinesiologist. She emphasized the importance of rest, proper nutrition, and support from her family in maintaining her physical and mental well-being.
In addition to her personal achievements, Gervais is dedicated to mentoring younger players and contributing to the team’s cohesion and success on the field. She highlighted the positive impact of head coach Rachel Lessard’s leadership and values on Canada’s performance.
