Nick Reiner, accused of murdering his parents Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been rejected access to his $1.5 million US trust fund intended for his legal defense. In a recent filing, Reiner had sought unpaid funds from a trust established by his parents in 1993.

Trustees, as per court documents from CBC News, turned down Reiner’s request, invoking a California law section known as the “slayer statute,” which bars individuals from inheriting assets from someone they have unlawfully killed. Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and Michele, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed in their California residence on December 14. Nick Reiner, their son, was arrested shortly after. He faces murder charges following a July 20 indictment but has pleaded not guilty.

The indictment, unveiled by a Los Angeles County grand jury, alleges that Reiner premeditated the attack on his parents, potentially making him eligible for the death penalty, a decision pending from District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s office. Reiner is set for a pretrial hearing in September, represented currently by public defender Kimberly Greene.

As outlined in the June filing, individual trust funds were also set up for Reiner’s siblings, with Nick due to receive half of his trust fund at age 30 and the remainder at 35. Alleging non-receipt of the allocated funds, Reiner claimed in a petition that the trustees were unjustly withholding his entitled money, totaling at least $1.5 million US.

High-profile attorney Alan Jackson initially represented Reiner but exited the case without explanation. Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover his legal fees before retracting their offer. Jackson expressed willingness to return if funds were available for his services.

The lawyer overseeing the trust fund and the incoming trustee determined that fund distribution was on hold pending the criminal case outcome against Reiner, emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding the situation. The trust fund remains inaccessible until clarity on the impact of legal statutes on Reiner’s entitlement.

Eight months post the tragic incident, many details remain undisclosed, with authorities refraining from speculating on motives. Jake Reiner shared his emotional turmoil in dealing with his parents’ murder and the attendant focus on his brother’s alleged involvement.

In a Substack essay, Jake Reiner expressed the profound loss of both parents simultaneously, emphasizing their undeserving fate. Rob Reiner’s illustrious career in Hollywood encompassed iconic films like “The Princess Bride,” “A Few Good Men,” and “Stand By Me.” His meeting with Michele during the production of “When Harry Met Sally” was pivotal, inspiring him to alter the film’s ending to unite the main characters, a gesture symbolizing their enduring 36-year marriage.
