A recently discovered groundsnake from New Guinea has been named Lielaphis slashi by scientists at the Field Museum in Chicago, in tribute to Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. The 71-centimeter reddish-brown reptile is now officially known as Slash’s groundsnake. Slash, known for his love of snakes and support for zoos and museums, expressed his honor at having the snake named after him, calling it an unexpected but exciting moment.

The snake was first identified in 2006 by Chris Austin, a herpetology professor at Louisiana State University, during fieldwork in New Guinea. The island, known for its rich biodiversity, particularly in its lush forests, poses challenges for scientists studying its wildlife. Despite the snake’s unassuming appearance, genetic testing revealed it to be a distinct species within its genus.

Although not harmful to humans, Slash’s groundsnake may prey on small lizards and reptile eggs using its enlarged teeth. However, the species faces threats from human activities such as coffee farming and mining, putting its habitat at risk. Naming the snake after Slash not only pays homage to the rock star but also aims to raise awareness about the fragile ecosystem it inhabits.

Sara Ruane, associate curator of herpetology at the Field Museum, shared her early fascination with reptiles and her dream of becoming a herpetologist, inspired in part by Slash’s love for snakes. She viewed naming the snake after Slash as a privilege and a unique opportunity in her scientific career. Slash, who shares a passion for natural history with Ruane, was described as a knowledgeable and enthusiastic snake enthusiast during his visit to the museum.

In conclusion, while Guns N’ Roses may have had a reputation as the “most dangerous band in the world,” Slash’s groundsnake is far from threatening. This unassuming forest dweller now holds a special place in both the reptile kingdom and the rock and roll world, serving as a reminder of the importance of preserving diverse ecosystems and appreciating the role snakes play in the natural world.
