“Former Afghan Translator Struggles After Taliban Takeover”

Abdul Razaq Khan, a former translator and guide for Canadian journalists in Afghanistan, received a late-night message from one of the reporters he had assisted through the chaotic streets of Kandahar. This happened five years ago when he was living in Kabul after the Canadian troops left Afghanistan and he had started working at USAID.

In the summer of 2021, as the Taliban advanced towards Kabul, Khan was asked if he was safe. He described the situation as apocalyptic. Now, residing in Canada, he is still coming to terms with losing his job, home, and country, along with the rapid downfall of the western-supported Afghan government.

Having escaped on foot across the Pakistani border, Khan considers himself fortunate as his association with Canadian media had made him a target for the Taliban. Many Afghans who worked with journalists, foreign troops, and aid groups faced similar risks.

The Taliban’s takeover not only displaced masses of Afghans but also ushered in a harsh regime that marginalizes women, suppresses media freedom, and enforces strict moral codes. The Zan Times, a women’s rights group in Afghanistan, has revealed a surge in violence against women with little accountability for the perpetrators.

Despite efforts by some countries to evacuate and support at-risk Afghan women, challenges persist. A recent report by Local Staff International and AfghanEvac highlighted the struggles faced by allied nations in evacuating and resettling vulnerable Afghans.

Canada, for instance, welcomed over 60,000 vulnerable Afghans post the Taliban’s seizure of power in 2021. Yet, there are numerous individuals still under the oppressive rule of the Taliban, emphasizing the need for continued support and action from the international community.

Senator Chris Coons emphasized the importance of honoring commitments to those who risked their lives supporting American and NATO forces. The report underlines the varying responses of nations in fulfilling their promises to Afghan allies, signaling the ongoing challenges in this critical chapter of recent history.
