Skate Canada has announced that Mike Slipchuk will step down from his position as high-performance director at the end of the 2026-27 season, marking the conclusion of his two-decade tenure in the role. Slipchuk joined Skate Canada in 2006, overseeing a period during which Canadian figure skaters achieved remarkable success, securing a total of 10 Olympic and 24 world championship medals.

Among the highlights of Slipchuk’s tenure was Canada’s impressive performance at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, where the team clinched four Olympic medals. Notably, ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, as well as the skaters in the team event, secured gold medals under his guidance. Virtue and Moir’s gold medal win at the event further solidified their status as the most decorated Olympic figure skaters in history, with three gold and two silver medals to their names.

Despite past successes, Canada’s Olympic performance has seen a downturn in recent years, with no medals captured at the Beijing Games in 2022 and only one bronze medal, courtesy of Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier in ice dance, at the most recent competition in Milan Cortina earlier this year.

Over the past two decades, Canada has produced world champions across various disciplines, with standout achievements including Patrick Chan’s consecutive men’s world titles from 2011 to 2013 and Virtue and Moir’s three gold medals. The country’s most recent world champions were pairs skaters Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in 2024.

Following his departure, Slipchuk is set to remain engaged with Skate Canada in an advisory capacity to facilitate the transition to a new high-performance director. Reflecting on his time with the organization, Slipchuk expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the high-performance program, emphasizing the profound impact of working alongside exceptional athletes and coaches. He highlighted the enduring memories of witnessing Canadian athletes achieve podium success with the national flag draped over their shoulders as moments that will forever hold special significance.
