Flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of developing radiation-related cancers compared to individuals working with radioactive materials, as revealed by a recent study. Cosmic radiation, originating from space, is more concentrated at higher altitudes where flight personnel operate. Previous studies hinted at increased cancer mortality rates among frequent flyers, particularly pilots and flight attendants.
The latest research, published by JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed data from over 12 million death certificates, focusing on cancer types associated with radiation exposure. Flight attendants had the highest proportion of deaths from radiation-related cancers among more than 500 occupations, followed by pilots. These two groups exhibited elevated odds of succumbing to various radiation-related cancers compared to others.
Contrary to radiation-related cancers, flight crews did not show higher mortality rates from cancers unrelated to radiation exposure, suggesting that occupational radiation exposure is the primary factor behind the increased risk. The study challenges the belief that excess skin cancer risk among flight crews stems from sunny layovers, indicating that cockpit environments may play a more significant role.
The study found that flight attendants had a 50% higher likelihood of dying from radiation-related cancers than the general workforce, while pilots had a 36% higher probability. Despite limitations in determining specific radiation exposure levels, the study highlights the need to address radiation risks faced by aircrews, emphasizing the importance of regular health screenings and heightened cancer vigilance among flight personnel.
