The return of Canadian negotiators and the implementation of 50 per cent U.S. tariffs are causing concern within the Canadian business community. Various business leaders exporting products like plywood and wine are alarmed by the significant impact of these new levies on their business relations with the United States.

The introduction of 50 per cent tariffs covers approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian exports to the U.S. While this represents only a small portion of Canada’s total exports to the U.S., it is estimated that these tariffs could reduce Canada’s GDP growth by half a percentage point. This decrease is attributed to businesses being cautious about making new investments due to the uncertainty created by the tariff regime.

Certain industries will be disproportionately affected by the tariffs, with electronics and electrical equipment producers expected to feel the brunt of the impact. Sectors such as plastics, furniture, bedding, lighting, industrial machinery, and paper products are also likely to face challenges. The provinces of Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, where much of the manufacturing for these products occurs, will be particularly exposed to the new tariffs.

Smaller businesses exporting consumer products like honey, candles, and hockey sticks will also be impacted. These businesses may struggle to compete with American alternatives, leading to potential revenue losses and decreased competitiveness in the U.S. market.

An analysis by economist Trevor Tombe suggests that tens of thousands of jobs in Canada could be at risk due to the new tariffs. The ripple effect of job losses could extend beyond the directly affected sectors to industries that support tariff-affected businesses.

The uncertainty surrounding the tariffs poses a significant risk to the Canadian economy. The ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the U.S., along with the threat of further retaliatory measures, could exacerbate the economic impact. The failure to reach a resolution in trade talks has cast a shadow over the future of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), potentially leading to job losses and economic setbacks if the agreement falls through.

Overall, the introduction of these tariffs has created a cloud of uncertainty over Canada’s economic outlook, with businesses facing tough decisions regarding hiring and investment until the trade situation stabilizes.
