Music enthusiasts discovered the closure notice over the past weekend, revealing that after September 15, 2026, Columbia House would no longer accept new orders. Initially launched in 1955 by Columbia Records as the Columbia Record Club, the company aimed to reach music fans in areas without access to record stores through its mail-order service. Over the years, the business expanded to include cassettes, CDs, and later DVDs of movies and TV shows.
The unique marketing strategy of offering multiple records, tapes, or CDs for a penny through magazine and newspaper inserts attracted many early customers. Columbia House’s success was evident as it shipped over a billion records and held a significant share of CD sales by 1994.
However, with the rise of online music options, the company’s revenue declined, leading to the cessation of music sales in 2010 under Direct Brands ownership. Operations in Canada were also closed at that time, with a shift to focusing solely on DVD sales. Despite a bankruptcy filing in the U.S. by its parent company, Filmed Entertainment Inc., in 2015, Columbia House continued operating until the recent closure announcement.
As physical media experiences a resurgence in popularity, with vinyl sales reaching new heights, Columbia House’s closure marks the end of an era.
