A peculiar marvel of nature, the narwhal tusk, which can grow up to three meters in length, is a unique feature of these marine mammals. Unlike other mammal tusks, the narwhal tusk grows perfectly straight without any curves. A recent study by an international team of researchers has uncovered the reason behind this straight growth pattern, attributing it to the tusk’s distinctive opposing spirals.
Published in the journal Nature Communications, the research delves into how the two opposing spirals, one clockwise and the other counterclockwise, contribute to the straight growth of the tusk. The investigation originated when a colleague of Henrik Birkedal, an organic chemistry expert from Aarhus University in Denmark, raised questions about the handedness of molecules and the consistent spiraling direction of narwhal tusks observed in Greenland.
Collaborating with biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, Birkedal’s team employed advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans to scrutinize the molecular composition of the tusks and spirals. The analysis revealed the presence of two opposing spirals: a left-handed spiral on the outer cementum layer and a right-handed one in the inner dentine layer.
This discovery not only solves the mystery of the narwhal’s straight tusk but also holds promise in shedding light on the structural principles of human bones and other analogous biological phenomena. Martin Nweeia, a narwhal biologist from Harvard University, lauded the research for delving into the complexities of the narwhal tusk, emphasizing its role as a sensory organ rather than a tool for defense or feeding.
