In northeastern Alberta, researchers are tackling copper deficiencies in cattle by utilizing a unique method of applying the mineral to wheat crops. At the same time, they are experimenting with various cover crops to effectively control weeds and reduce herbicide usage in another part of the field.
Jay Cory, a farmer and the chair of the Lakeland Agricultural Research Association (LARA), emphasized the value of research in sparking new ideas and insights for agricultural practices. LARA, a non-profit organization serving northeastern Alberta, conducts its studies at the Fort Kent research field, situated approximately 250 kilometers northeast of Edmonton between Bonnyville and Cold Lake.
Producers from the area recently visited the research facility to explore the ongoing trials, which focus on enhancing productivity and sustainability through research on different crop varieties and farming techniques.
Maria Angelica Ouellette, a research scientist at LARA, highlighted the organization’s commitment to testing innovative ideas under real-world conditions, including factors like varying precipitation and temperature. The research conducted is influenced by inquiries from local farmers, aiming to support sustainable crop growth and land productivity.
Notably, this year’s trials face the challenge of excessively wet weather, impacting crop performance and providing valuable insights for researchers. Alyssa Krawchuk, the executive director of LARA, stressed the importance of focusing on local conditions due to significant climatic differences across the province. The organization aims to minimize risks for farmers by conducting unbiased research and sharing findings through initiatives like field tours.
