Initially, Ericsson and teammate Will Power made contact as Ericsson overtook Power late in the race. Subsequently, Ericsson successfully passed Romain Grosjean with four laps remaining to secure his fifth IndyCar career win, emphasizing that their victory was primarily due to their car’s superior performance.
Following Ericsson, Grosjean finished in second place, achieving his first top-five finish of the year. Power took the third spot, with Alex Palou, the current leader in the driver rankings, coming in fourth.
Notably, Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who holds the second position in the driver rankings, are all teammates at Andretti Global. When Kirkwood crashed out of the race, the team strategically targeted Palou to prevent him from gaining more points and potentially securing his fifth IndyCar title.
Despite some miscommunication leading to a brief incident between Power and Ericsson during the race, the team managed to stay focused on their goal of disrupting Palou’s lead in the standings. Palou earned 32 points on race day, widening his lead over Kirkwood to 133 points.
Grosjean, who has yet to secure an IndyCar victory since transitioning from Formula One, faced challenges towards the end of the race due to fuel and tire wear. Despite this, Ericsson successfully passed Grosjean, acknowledging the difficulty of maneuvering through the tight racecourse.
The race saw various incidents, with multiple cautions and cars forced off the track due to collisions. Markham hosted its first IndyCar race after the event relocated from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, where it had been held for decades. The inaugural event faced logistical challenges, with the first day of practice and qualifying being canceled, necessitating a condensed schedule on the subsequent day.
