An individual originally from Edmonton who spent an extended period in ICE detention has returned to Canada and is now recounting his experiences during his time in custody.

Curtis Wright, aged 40, a long-time resident of the United States, was held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Texas for nine months following a business trip to Mexico in November. The grounds for his detention were traced back to a minor drug possession offense when he was 17 years old.

Motivated by a desire to be close to his two young sons, aged 8 and 11, from a previous marriage who reside in Texas, Wright fought to remain in the U.S. However, he was ultimately returned to Canada in mid-August and is currently residing temporarily with his fiancée and their toddler in Kelowna, B.C.

In an interview with Edmonton AM, Wright outlined the challenges he encountered while striving to stay in the U.S. He described the initial encounter upon his return from Mexico, where he was detained and subjected to various restrictions and conditions. Wright had never experienced such a situation despite his frequent travels to the U.S. in the past.

Throughout his nine-month detention, Wright faced multiple setbacks in the legal process, with court dates repeatedly postponed to discourage him from pursuing his case. Despite efforts from various officials and appeals, he eventually made the difficult decision to accept deportation back to Canada for the sake of his family.

Reflecting on his time in detention, Wright highlighted the unsanitary conditions, poor treatment by officers, and the psychological toll of being confined in a facility where basic comforts were lacking. After careful consideration, he concluded that returning to Canada was the best course of action for his family’s well-being.

Looking ahead, Wright plans to resume his career in the oil and gas industry, with a new opportunity awaiting him in Edmonton. Supported by his employer and family, he is determined to move forward positively from this challenging chapter in his life.
