Terry Fox, a prominent figure in Canadian history, captured the hearts of many through his 1980 cross-country run to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. A recent documentary named “Run Terry Run,” showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival, sheds light on previously unreleased footage, unveiling the personal side of Fox’s journey.

Directed by Sean Menard, the film utilizes 96 unseen reels of footage to bring forth Fox’s personality, determination, humor, and challenges. Menard’s quest for authentic documentation was fueled by the scarcity of high-quality footage available, leading him to unearth the reels in a Toronto storage unit with the help of the Terry Fox Foundation.

The documentary reveals various insights into Fox’s journey, including his ambitious goal of running 8,000 kilometers from St. John’s to Victoria, covering the distance of a marathon daily. Despite not reaching his intended destination due to stops for rallies and cancer research advocacy, Fox’s run transformed into a nationwide movement.

Fox’s interaction with his best friend, Doug Alward, and the addition of his younger brother, Darrell Fox, to the journey brought new dynamics to the Marathon of Hope. The film also highlights Fox’s frustration with media coverage and his firm stance on directing all raised funds towards cancer research.

Additionally, the documentary delves into Fox’s belief that a car accident contributed to his cancer, his inspiration from young cancer patients, and his complex relationship with his prosthetic leg. The challenges faced in Quebec and the overwhelming public attention in Ontario further underscore Fox’s resilience and impact.

Despite his battle with cancer leading to the premature end of his run, Terry Fox’s legacy lives on through the ongoing fundraising efforts that have surpassed $1 billion for cancer research. His story continues to inspire, emphasizing that extraordinary achievements can stem from ordinary individuals. “Run Terry Run” is set to premiere in theaters on October 9.
