Canada, as the sole G7 nation lacking its own space launch capabilities, is actively pursuing the development of a Canadian-made rocket. Several Canadian companies are in a race to establish the country’s independent access to space, amid concerns that SpaceX, a major player in the industry, may reduce its launch services.
The journey to achieve this goal is complex and challenging due to the high costs involved and shifting government priorities. With Canada currently reliant on external providers like SpaceX to launch satellites, the lack of domestic launch capabilities poses a risk of foreign entities denying access to launch Canadian technology.
Recognizing the strategic importance of space, the Canadian government designated it as a key sovereign capability in its Defense Industrial Strategy. Recent funding initiatives, including $8.3 million allocated to three Canadian companies, aim to support the development of light-lift rocket capabilities by 2028.
One of the companies, NordSpace, faced setbacks in its initial rocket test launch in 2025 but remains committed to further attempts. Another participant, Reaction Dynamics, is focused on innovative engine design to achieve orbital launches by the government’s target date.
Canada Rocket Company, founded to develop a medium-lift rocket, has attracted substantial private investment and is building a state-of-the-art test facility to facilitate its space launch ambitions by 2032. Overcoming funding challenges has historically hindered rocket development in Canada, but the current influx of public and private funds signals a turning point.
In parallel, SpaceX’s plans to phase out its Falcon 9 rocket in favor of the Starship raise concerns for satellite customers reliant on its services. This transition presents an opportunity for emerging rocket manufacturers like Canada Rocket Company to fill the void left by SpaceX’s evolving strategy.
As the Canadian space industry gains momentum, industry leaders emphasize the long-term commitment and substantial investment required to establish a successful launch program. The road to achieving regular rocket launches from Canada will demand persistent efforts and continued financial support from both public and private sectors.
