A search for a new location for a library in the west end of St. John’s has faced a setback, but an advocate remains optimistic about finding a suitable spot soon. The Michael Donovan Public Library closed two months ago at the Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road following the expiration of its rental agreement. Despite efforts to secure a new location through a provincial government tender, no submissions were received.

Josh Smee, vice-chair of the non-profit advisory board Friends of the St. John’s Public Library, expressed frustration and disappointment over the lack of progress, emphasizing the impact on the community members who are currently without a library. He highlighted the popularity of the former library despite its small size and expressed hope for a successful reopening in the west end.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is collaborating with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries to determine the next steps, aiming to keep the library in the west end of St. John’s. Smee urged potential landlords in the area to participate in the process, emphasizing the importance of community support for the library’s relocation. He anticipates a revised tender that will attract interested hosts and lead to a successful outcome.

Library patron Juanette Anthony shared her experience of the library closure, emphasizing its convenience and the need for a larger space with enhanced resources. She expressed a desire for the library to reopen in the same area with expanded facilities to accommodate her love for books and computer access.

The community’s strong attachment to the library and the dedication of its staff were highlighted by Smee, reflecting the widespread sentiment of missing the library branch in the west end. The ongoing efforts to secure a new location underscore the significance of the library as a valuable resource for the local residents.

Overall, the quest for a new home for the library in the west end of St. John’s continues, with stakeholders working towards a solution that meets the needs and expectations of the community.
