At his marina in Sackets Harbor, New York, Mayor Alex Morgia gazes out at the water on a cloudy Wednesday afternoon, describing the captivating beauty he often witnesses, even on overcast days.

Morgia appreciates the unique sunsets over Lake Ontario, especially when the sun peeks through the clouds, creating a stunning display of colors. The small village, located on the eastern shore of the lake, is now at the center of a dispute between the United States and Canada over tariffs and President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

Sackets Harbor, situated about a 40-minute drive from the Canadian border, has historical significance as a site of two major battles during the War of 1812. Mayor Morgia mentions finding cannonballs in residents’ yards, which are sometimes used as doorstops.

While Mayor Morgia downplays the support for renaming the lake, he, along with other residents and officials in upstate New York near the border, are concerned about the potential negative impact on their communities due to the ongoing dispute between the two countries.

Corey Fram, the director of the Thousand Islands Regional Tourism Development Corporation, expresses worry about the declining Canadian spending and border crossings on the U.S. side of the Thousand Islands Bridge. Fram emphasizes the emotional toll on border communities, citing challenges faced in marketing efforts on both sides.

Anthony Adamczyk, the executive director of the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority, notes a significant decrease in border crossings from Canada in recent years, leading to a decline in traffic volume and toll revenue at the bridge.

Residents in Ogdensburg and Sackets Harbor, located in St. Lawrence County and Jefferson County, respectively, find themselves in a complex situation due to the ongoing trade disputes. Local opinions on Trump’s tactics vary, with some expressing support for efforts to equalize trade relationships, while others voice concerns about rising costs and uncertainties.

Republican assemblyman Scott Gray, representing Ogdensburg and Sackets Harbor, acknowledges residents’ concerns and emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong economic ties between the U.S. and Canada. Gray calls for fair trade deals without causing animosity or friction between the two countries.

Mayor Morgia questions when the U.S. government will stop escalating tensions with Canada, expressing sympathy for Canadians calling on Americans to urge their leaders to ease punitive measures. He highlights the upcoming midterm elections as a potential turning point for holding leaders accountable for their actions.
