A fire in Naujaat, Nunavut, has caused damage to construction materials designated for a public housing project in the community. The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) stated that it is currently uncertain if this incident will impact the project’s timeline.

The fire ignited near the hamlet’s waterfront on Wednesday night. Naujaat’s senior administrative officer, Chantal Pelletier, mentioned that the local fire department promptly responded to the scene.

The NHC confirmed that the construction materials were meant for an eight-unit public housing initiative. A spokesperson from the corporation mentioned that they are awaiting the fire chief’s report and collaborating with the project contractor and local authorities to evaluate the extent of the destruction.

The completion date for the eight-plex is set for June 2027. The spokesperson highlighted that it is premature to ascertain the effect of the fire on the project’s timeline at this stage.

Regarding the cause of the fire, an RCMP spokesperson stated that there is currently no information available for disclosure or confirmation of any ongoing investigation.
