Renowned Britain’s Got Talent judge, Alesha Dixon, is part of an intriguing online documentary series called Mission Motherland. This series showcases four British celebrities delving into their family roots and exploring Black British identity.
Each episode follows a celebrity as they journey to their ancestral homes, walking in the footsteps of their parents, exploring significant places from their past, and unraveling the stories of their family’s history. Moreover, each participant undertakes a personal mission to give back to their connected communities, reflecting on their family’s legacy and how it shapes their identity.
In her upcoming episode on January 23, Alesha Dixon, a 47-year-old mother of two, travels to Jamaica with her brothers to unveil the untold stories of her family’s past on the island. The journey uncovers a rich legacy marked by challenges, resilience, and a history of resistance against colonial forces.
As Alesha digs deeper into her family’s narrative, she confronts emotional gaps, including a grandmother who seldom discussed the past and the absence of a grandfather she never knew. Through these revelations, she starts to piece together a largely unknown lineage, understanding how her family’s history influences her own identity.
Alesha, a former member of Mis-Teeq and a well-known TV personality, has always celebrated her Jamaican heritage, incorporating it into her music and expressing a desire to record a reggae album in Jamaica. The insightful series, produced by Big Deal Films, also features Clara Amfo visiting Ghana, AJ Tracey exploring Trinidad, and Jimmy Akingbola reconnecting with his Nigerian roots.
Mission Motherland will be available on 5’s streaming service and the BET International YouTube channel starting January 20.
