UK inflation surged to 3.4% in December, primarily fueled by increased prices for tobacco and airfares. This uptick from the 3.2% recorded in November represents the first rise in the headline rate in five months, contrary to the expectations of most economists.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) releases monthly data on inflation, which tracks how the prices of goods and services have fluctuated over time. The December inflation spike was attributed to a rise in tobacco duty, elevating cigarette prices, and the higher cost of airfares during the festive season.

Additionally, the ONS highlighted increased expenses for certain food items like bread and cereals, partially offset by decreased rental costs and lower oil prices, which aided in reducing raw material prices for businesses.

Grant Fitzner, ONS’s chief economist, indicated that the December inflation rise was influenced by elevated tobacco prices, escalated airfare costs, and a surge in food expenses, particularly for bread and cereals. On the other hand, reduced rents inflation and lower prices for recreational and cultural purchases helped balance these increases.

Inflation serves as a gauge of how much more expensive goods are compared to the previous year. The Bank of England targets a 2% inflation rate and adjusts interest rates to manage inflation levels. By raising interest rates, borrowing becomes more costly, curbing spending and demand, thereby lowering inflation rates.

The base rate, which stood at 0.1% in December 2021, had peaked at 5.25% in August 2023 before being gradually reduced to 3.75%. Inflation peaked at 11.1% in October 2022 due to surging energy and food costs post-Covid and amid geopolitical tensions. Despite dropping to 1.7% in September 2024, inflation started to climb again in October 2024.

In conclusion, the ONS uses a “basket of goods” to calculate inflation, representing consumer spending patterns. The headline inflation figure is an average, meaning individual prices may vary.
