Celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused a hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, of neglecting her one-year-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed away after a brief illness. Adichie, known for award-winning books like Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun, expressed profound sorrow alongside her partner, Dr Ivara Esege, over the tragic loss.
In a statement, Adichie blamed Euracare Hospital for her son’s death, citing an incident on January 6 where she alleged that improper monitoring led to a fatal outcome. She claimed that her son, who was being prepared for medical evacuation to Johns Hopkins Hospital, suffered complications after receiving a sedative during an MRI scan.
According to Adichie, her son was given an excessive dose of propofol, causing him to require resuscitation. Despite efforts to stabilize him, Nkanu succumbed to seizures and cardiac arrest while at the hospital’s intensive care unit.
Euracare Hospital refuted claims of negligence, emphasizing its adherence to medical standards and collaboration with external medical teams. The hospital expressed condolences to the grieving family and pledged a thorough investigation into the matter to uphold clinical governance standards.
As the investigation continues, the hospital remains committed to transparent engagement with regulatory processes while providing support to the bereaved family during this difficult period.
