An urgent warning has been issued to users of Android and iPhone devices regarding the potential dangers of using unofficial charging accessories. With most new devices now only coming with a USB-C cable without a charger, consumers are faced with the need to purchase additional adapters, typically costing at least £20.
Despite the convenience of cheaper alternatives available on online platforms like Amazon, where unofficial chargers can be found for under £8, consumer watchdog Which? is cautioning against the use of these products due to significant safety concerns.
After conducting tests on chargers purchased from various online marketplaces including Amazon, AliExpress, and eBay, Which? discovered alarming results. Nine of the chargers were flagged for posing an electric shock risk due to substandard manufacturing, while eight were identified as potential fire or explosion hazards.
An imitation Apple USB-C 35W Power Adapter priced at £11.99 was found to be a counterfeit product that failed safety assessments, even though it mimicked the appearance of a genuine Apple charger.
Further investigations revealed chargers lacking essential UK safety markings and devices with hazardous internal circuitry that could lead to overheating, fires, or explosions. This isn’t the first time Which? has raised alarms about unsafe electrical products being sold through online platforms.
Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences that poorly designed electrical items could have, urging the government to enforce stricter product safety regulations for online marketplaces to protect consumers effectively.
In response to the findings, Amazon reaffirmed its commitment to customer safety, mentioning its collaboration with Electrical Safety First to promote safe charging practices. The company assured that all products on its platform comply with relevant laws and regulations, and any identified risky chargers have been removed promptly.
B&Q also echoed similar sentiments, stressing its dedication to product safety and proactive measures to prevent the listing of recalled items on its Marketplace platform.
Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from official retailers or reputable brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to mitigate safety risks associated with cheaper alternatives. While these options may come at a higher price, experts emphasize that the potential hazards of using substandard chargers far outweigh any cost savings.
