Japan’s quarterback, Take Taniguchi, threw five touchdown passes, while Canada’s former CFL quarterback, Michael O’Connor, threw three TD passes. In the quarterfinals, Canada will face American Samoa, who caused an upset by defeating the top-ranked U.S. team.
On the other hand, the Canadian women’s team finished at the top of their group with a flawless 3-0 record after defeating Japan 34-20. They are set to play against Austria in the quarterfinals, with a potential semifinal clash against the winner of Mexico and Spain on the horizon. Quarterback Sara Parker was instrumental in the victory against Japan, throwing four touchdown passes, two of which went to Caroline Moquin-Joubert. Additionally, Alexane Fournier, Marianne Quirion, and Frederique Morneau contributed to the team’s success with touchdown receptions and a rushing touchdown.
The competition not only seeks to crown a world champion but also offers teams the opportunity to secure berths for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, marking the sport’s debut in the Olympic program.
