Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb also contributed 13 points each to the team’s 72-57 win over Senegal.
Reflecting on the game, Canadian head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their tough play and strong presence on the boards. Canada’s dominance on the offensive glass, with a 15-8 advantage, was crucial in securing the victory. Tara Wallack’s exceptional effort, grabbing four offensive rebounds, provided Canada with valuable extra possessions.
Swords’ sharp shooting from beyond the arc, sinking three three-pointers in the first quarter, set the tone for Canada’s early control of the game. Despite Senegal’s resurgence in the third quarter, Canada maintained their lead, ultimately outscoring their opponents 26-14 in the paint and shooting an impressive 52.5% from that area. Both teams capitalized on turnovers equally, with 11 points each, while Senegal narrowly edged Canada in bench scoring, 31-29.
Canada’s next challenge will be against the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET, following a rest day on Tuesday.
