Canada’s Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw events at the recent Diamond League competition held in Chorzow, Poland. Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed the spectators at the Silesian Stadium with a winning throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt, showcasing her dominance as the current Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games champion. DeAnna Price of the United States secured the second position with a throw of 75.23 meters, followed by Italy’s Sara Fantini in third place at 71.95 meters.
Continuing the Canadian success in hammer throwing, Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo, B.C., claimed victory in the men’s competition with an exceptional throw of 82.92 meters. Katzberg now holds prestigious titles from the Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games. The second spot was secured by Germany’s Merlin Hummel with a throw of 81.25 meters, while Hungary’s Bence Halász finished third with a throw of 79.44 meters.
In the men’s 100m final, Canada’s Andre De Grasse finished sixth with a time of 9.96 seconds at the Diamond League event in Silesia, Poland. The race was won by Jamaica’s Oblique Seville in a meeting-record time of 9.83 seconds, with Kenny Bednarek from the United States coming in second with 9.87 seconds, and Christian Coleman from the United States finishing third in 9.93 seconds.
The women’s 100m race saw American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden clinching victory with a season-best time of 10.78 seconds. Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia secured the second position with a season-best time of 10.83 seconds, while Sha’Carri Richardson from the United States, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medallist, finished third in 10.96 seconds.
An unexpected win came in the men’s 1,500m event as American Ethan Strand crossed the finish line first in a season-best time of 3:30.77. Kenyan teenager Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech came second in 3:31.14, followed by American Cole Hocker in third place with a time of 3:31.16. The upcoming Diamond League meeting is scheduled for August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, before the final Diamond League event in Brussels. The track and field season will culminate with the World Athletics Ultimate Championship from September 11 to 13 in Budapest. Katzberg has secured a spot in the Ultimate Championship due to his status as the reigning Olympic and world champion in the men’s hammer throw, while Rogers will not participate as the women’s hammer throw is not part of the championship program despite holding multiple titles.
