Prime Minister Mark Carney has criticized U.S. cabinet members for their disparaging comments towards Canada and its military, stating that such remarks are inappropriate for their positions. Carney urged the U.S. officials to refrain from engaging in provocative language and to approach trade negotiations with more seriousness. He expressed his views following comments made by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent likening Canada’s navy to a closed amusement park ride and U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy’s assertion that Canada lacks a military.

Carney emphasized the need for constructive dialogue, stating that the U.S. must move away from provocative gestures and focus on meaningful discussions. He mentioned that the breakdown in trade talks on August 21 led to a series of insulting remarks and social media provocations from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration towards Canada.

In response to the disrespectful comments, Canadian officials including Defence Minister David McGuinty and Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego criticized the U.S. cabinet members for their lack of decorum and respect for Canada’s military history. Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew also pushed back against Trump’s remarks, with Ford inviting the U.S. president to “kiss my ass” and Kinew making a colorful comparison.

Carney revealed that Canada withdrew from negotiations due to last-minute demands from the U.S. side that were deemed unfair and economically unsound. He highlighted specific issues such as restrictions on trade agreements with other nations and threats to key industries like French-language media and bilingual product labeling.

Despite the breakdown in talks, Carney expressed optimism for a potential trade deal that respects Canada’s sovereignty and cultural identity. Following the imposition of tariffs by the U.S., Canada announced retaliatory measures, matching the tariffs dollar for dollar.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne emphasized the importance of a constructive approach in negotiations, stating that Canada’s key industries must be protected. He underscored Canada’s role as a vital source of food, energy, and critical minerals in the global landscape.

In a meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent at the G20 finance ministers’ gathering, Champagne reiterated Canada’s firm stance on key economic issues. Bessent acknowledged the need to address trade challenges at the leadership level for a potential resolution.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that a majority of Americans oppose Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods and the proposal to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The poll indicated significant disapproval of these measures among American respondents.

The results of the poll, which surveyed 1,023 U.S. adults, underscored public sentiment against the trade policies advocated by the Trump administration. The findings highlighted a growing concern over escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada.
