The Canadian Elite Basketball League has reverted to a one-game championship format after the cancellation of the best-of-three final between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and the Brampton Honey Badgers due to unsafe playing conditions caused by court condensation. The decision was made swiftly to prioritize the safety of players, officials, and fans.
Brampton had initially taken a 6-0 lead in the final, but the game was halted after Winnipeg caught up. The single-game final will now take place on Saturday in Winnipeg at 3:30 p.m. ET, as the league determined this to be the fairest way to crown a champion given the inability to complete the best-of-three series within the scheduled timeframe.
Honey Badgers CEO Al Whitley expressed regret over the game’s cancellation, with Brampton having won the first two encounters against Winnipeg earlier in the season. The Sea Bears, led by Xavier Moon and Simon Hildebrandt, have had an impressive playoff run, one win away from securing their first championship.
Sea Bears advanced by defeating the Saskatoon Mamba and stunning the Vancouver Bandits in the West final. Brampton, finishing second in the Eastern Conference, overcame the Ottawa BlackJacks and the Niagara River Lions to reach the championship series. Notably, both teams are owned by siblings, with David Asper leading the Sea Bears and Leonard Asper heading the Honey Badgers.
