A woman in Nova Scotia expressed regret for alerting the RCMP about a reckless driver, as it led to an officer entering her home without her permission. Robin MacDougall was traveling to Port Hawkesbury to celebrate Father’s Day with her parents when she noticed a vehicle swerving on Highway 104. Concerned, she dialed 911 and was advised to call again if the driver left the highway. MacDougall made another call when she exited the highway, informing the dispatcher that the erratic driver continued towards Cape Breton.

To MacDougall’s surprise, she later received a call from an RCMP officer stating they had mistakenly entered her house. The officer had entered through an unlocked back door since MacDougall and her partner typically left it open. Feeling her privacy was violated, MacDougall was puzzled by the turn of events and worried about her cats escaping. She contacted a friend, Jade Lowe, who found the officer apologetic upon arrival.

While MacDougall was alarmed by the incident, RCMP Staff Sgt. Kimberly Hillier defended the officer’s actions, citing a disconnected call as the reason for the home visit. Hillier explained that following a dropped call, attempts to reconnect with MacDougall failed, leading to the welfare check by the officer. The RCMP emphasized that their primary concern was the well-being of individuals, not a criminal investigation.

However, MacDougall disputed the claim of a dropped call, attributing any communication issues to poor cell service in the area. She stated that her phone logs did not show any disconnected calls to the RCMP and insisted she did not make a third call as suggested. Despite the conflicting narratives, the incident has raised questions about privacy and communication protocols in emergency situations.
