Summer McIntosh from Toronto kicked off her events at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, California, by securing a second-place finish in the women’s 200m freestyle. The 19-year-old, participating in this competition for the first time, completed the race in 1 minute 53.86 seconds, trailing Australia’s Lani Pallister, who set a new championship record with a time of 1:53.67. New Zealand’s Erika Fairweather took third place with a time of 1:55.05 at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.
After the race, McIntosh expressed some self-criticism, mentioning that she believes she could have performed better. She acknowledged that her start was not fast enough and that she may have overthought her strategy instead of focusing on racing. Despite the disappointment, she sees this as a learning opportunity and a step towards her goal of winning gold at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
During the race, Pallister initially led McIntosh by a small margin, but McIntosh managed to take the lead at the halfway mark. However, Pallister surged ahead in the final meters, ultimately securing the victory.
McIntosh, known for her success in various swimming disciplines, also shared her training routine, highlighting her focus on the 200m freestyle event. She aims to improve her performance further and is determined to achieve her goals in upcoming competitions.
In addition to the 200m freestyle, McIntosh is set to compete in other events at the championships, showcasing her versatility and determination to excel in different disciplines. She holds multiple world records in long-course swimming and continues to push herself to new heights in her career.
