Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant decrease in her income, echoing the sentiments of many others in the industry. The removal of SiriusXM’s Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, known for showcasing over 800 comedians, has been replaced by a new channel spearheaded by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This shift has led to financial setbacks and reduced exposure for Miele and numerous working-class comedians, while established celebrity comics dominate the airwaves. Miele emphasized the vital role Sirius XM played in supporting her financially during tough times, enabling many comedians to sustain themselves.

Despite promises from Maniscalco and SiriusXM to offer opportunities to comedians at various career stages, industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup highlights a concerning trend. The previous channel featured over 800 comedians monthly, earning $15 in royalties per play, whereas the revamped channel now includes only 275 comedians, predominantly favoring the top 50 artists.

Miele expressed concerns over the unequal distribution of wealth, noting the shift from a diverse group of comedians earning decent royalties to a select few generating significant income. The absence of platforms like SiriusXM jeopardizes the chances for emerging comedians to thrive and progress in the industry.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar shared his experience of a 30 to 40 percent reduction in royalties previously earned from Raw Comedy. This loss impacts many comedians who relied on these royalties to sustain their careers, with potential implications on work visas for those aiming to establish themselves in the U.S.

Several prominent comedians have urged Maniscalco to prioritize space for emerging talent on the channel. Despite clarifications that Maniscalco was not directly involved in the decision to end Raw Comedy, efforts are being made to ensure inclusivity and diverse representation on the platform.

As the comedy community navigates these challenges, unity and advocacy for fair treatment and compensation are essential. The recent shakeup underscores the vulnerability of comedians in the industry and the need for collective support and solidarity to address these financial setbacks effectively.
