Thieves in the United Kingdom have taken their crime to a new level. Authorities are currently working to recover approximately 70,000 pints of stolen Guinness beer. The stolen goods, valued at 115,000 pounds (equivalent to $216,000 Canadian dollars), were taken from a depot near Liverpool in northwest England, as reported by the Cheshire Constabulary on Thursday.
Detective Sergeant Gary McClatchy emphasized the importance of lawful acquisition, stating, “It is famously said that ‘Guinness is good for you,’ but that is only the case when it has been bought and paid for. We will not rest until all the stolen items are fully recovered.”
The theft occurred when two drivers seized two trailer loads of the popular dark beer on Monday night from an industrial park in Runcorn. The stolen Guinness, totaling around 800 barrels of stout, was intended for distribution to pubs. The trailers themselves were valued at 50,000 pounds ($93,000).
This incident follows a recent beer theft in the United States, where approximately 34,000 cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon were stolen, garnering public attention due to the brewer’s playful social media responses. The stolen Pabst, valued at $70,000 US ($97,000 Canadian), prompted the company to offer a $20,000 US reward for any information leading to its recovery.
In response to the theft, the company took to social media, addressing the thief directly, “To the thief: we don’t fault you for wanting to brag to your friends how much PBR you have, we just wish you obtained it the honorable way. P.S. this is real, and we are deadly serious.”
