A man has shared his reasons for maintaining contact with his ex-wife, despite her tragic act of killing their five children.

Back on June 20, 2001, Rusty Yates, a NASA engineer, went about his usual work routine at the Johnson Space Centre, unaware of the tragedy brewing in his own home. His wife, Andrea Yates, who was battling severe postpartum psychosis and schizophrenia, waited for him to leave before carrying out a horrific act.

Andrea drowned their children – Noah, seven, John, five, Paul, three, Luke, two, and Mary, six months old – in the bathtub, then laid them on a bed and covered them with a sheet. She alerted emergency services and then called Rusty, asking him to return home. When police arrived at their Clear Lake residence in Houston, Texas, Yates confessed to the unfathomable crime.

In a notorious case that shocked the nation, Yates faced five counts of capital murder, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty. However, her defense team argued successfully that her severe mental health issues post-Mary’s birth warranted psychiatric treatment over imprisonment.

After being convicted of capital murder in 2002 and receiving a life sentence with potential parole after 40 years, Yates’ verdict was later overturned on appeal. In 2006, a retrial found her not guilty by reason of insanity. This extraordinary case has recently been featured in an HBO documentary.

Presently, Yates resides in a mental health facility in Kerrville, Texas, where she reportedly continues to express delusional beliefs. She revealed to her prison psychiatrist that she felt her children were damned due to her own perceived evil nature. Despite their tumultuous past and divorce in 2005, Rusty still visits his ex-wife, describing her as caring and devoted.

In a candid conversation with People magazine, Rusty, now 61, disclosed his annual visits, text exchanges, and phone calls with Andrea, reminiscing about their shared past. He expressed disbelief at the tragic turn of events, emphasizing Andrea’s previous loving demeanor.
