A woman narrowly escaped tragedy in a devastating Spanish train crash by changing carriages when she couldn’t access the occupied toilet in her original carriage. Her decision to move to a different carriage, where everyone survived, was described by fellow passengers as a life-saving choice amidst the fatal incident that claimed the lives of 39 individuals.
The cause of the crash, which involved an Iryo train bound for Madrid colliding with a Renfe train heading to Huelva, remains under investigation. Spain’s Transport Minister, Oscar Puente, labeled the collision as peculiar due to recent track renovations and both trains operating within speed limits.
Passenger Lucas Merakio, who was in carriage five during the crash, recounted the chaotic scene where a young girl was frantically searching for her parents and non-Spanish-speaking passengers struggled to comprehend the situation. In an interview, Lucas detailed the intense vibrations, derailment, and subsequent darkness on the train, describing the harrowing experience as akin to a horror movie.
Following the collision, passengers assisted each other, providing water to those trapped underneath derailed carriages until emergency services arrived. The injured were treated at Adamuz Station, with medics overwhelmed by the influx of casualties, including a young girl separated from her parents. The aftermath revealed the overturned eighth carriage with fatal casualties, adding to the tragedy of the train crash.
