An Illinois woman accused of murdering her two-year-old son was reportedly engrossed in the high-profile trial of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy and communicating with friends about it just before her son’s tragic demise, according to prosecutors.

Corie Walsh, aged 40, faces three charges of first-degree murder following the discovery of her son, Barrett, lifeless in the basement of their suburban Chicago residence on September 1, as revealed in court documents obtained by NBC Chicago.

Prosecutors indicated that Walsh had a keen interest in Clancy’s widely publicized trial and was engaged in discussions about it with friends until approximately 12:30 p.m. on that fateful day, only for her son to be found deceased less than four hours later by a neighbor.

When discovered elsewhere in the house, Walsh had self-inflicted injuries, which authorities asserted. She later confessed to investigators that she took her son’s life because she believed he embodied the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” While Walsh’s attorney, Andrea Lyon, attributed the incident to a psychotic episode, referring to the boy’s death as a family tragedy.

Police were summoned to Walsh’s residence in Frankfort, about 56 kilometers southwest of Chicago, shortly before 4 p.m. following the neighbor’s discovery of Barrett in the basement, as detailed in the prosecutors’ petition to detain Walsh before trial.

The neighbor attempted CPR on the boy while alerting 911, and Barrett was subsequently pronounced dead at a hospital. An autopsy confirmed his cause of death as asphyxia resulting from ligature compression of the neck.

During a search of the premises, authorities located Walsh fully clothed in a bathtub filled with bloody water, with cuts on her wrists and thighs. She was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The revelation that Walsh had been monitoring Clancy’s trial surfaced following a Massachusetts judge declaring a mistrial in Clancy’s case due to a hung jury. Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, stood accused of murdering her three children in 2023, with her defense asserting postpartum psychosis as grounds for legal insanity. Prosecutors argued that Clancy was aware of her actions and their implications.

There is no suggestion by Illinois authorities that Clancy’s trial influenced Walsh’s son’s killing, and no publicly disclosed evidence links the two cases beyond Walsh’s discussions about Clancy’s trial.

Requests for comments from Frankfort police and prosecutors in Will County on Monday went unanswered.
