John O’Nabigon expressed deep sorrow and frustration after the recent loss of a young community member to a drug overdose in Long Lake #58 First Nation. This marks the third drug-related death of a young person in the community this year, prompting O’Nabigon to take action by hiring an Indigenous-run security company to manage checkpoints.

Earlier this year, Long Lake #58 declared a state of emergency due to drug traffickers supplying vulnerable members, leading to a joint emergency declaration with Ginoogaming First Nation. Chief Sheri Taylor emphasized the need for urgent action to address the increasing violence and drug-related crimes affecting their communities.

With Long Lake #58 and Ginoogaming facing ongoing challenges related to drug trafficking and safety concerns, efforts to seek support from government and policing agencies have yielded limited results. Both communities have struggled with high rates of opioid-related deaths, prompting the implementation of security measures to mitigate illegal drug activities.

The Anishinabek Police Service has been actively intercepting drugs trafficked from the Greater Toronto Area, supporting enforcement efforts in Ginoogaming and neighboring communities. Despite challenges, there have been positive outcomes from security initiatives, with a focus on enhancing community safety and well-being.

Efforts are ongoing to enhance mental wellness services and addiction treatment within the communities to address the root causes of drug-related issues. Through collaboration with government partners and increased community vigilance, there is a collective push for accountability among drug dealers and a commitment to supporting one another during times of crisis.
