Rachel Reeves, the Labour MP for Leeds West and Pudsey, has pledged substantial funding to transform Britain’s railways, accusing the Tories and Reform of wanting to withdraw £45 billion from the North. The Chancellor promised increased financial support for Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) during the next spending review to enhance travel experiences and community development promptly. Reeves criticized the Tories for neglecting the north for over a decade.
Emphasizing the personal significance of improving transportation, Reeves stated, “It is cash that builds the railways. It is brass tacks that gets things done.” She stressed the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth across the country and addressing long-standing disparities faced by the northern regions.
The initial phase of the project will focus on enhancing connections between key routes such as Sheffield and Leeds, Leeds and York, and Leeds and Bradford. Subsequent phases will introduce a new route connecting Liverpool and Manchester via Manchester airport and Warrington, with further plans to improve connections eastwards from Manchester to Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York.
In a scathing criticism of Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch, Reeves asserted that both would fail the North of England. She expressed confidence in Labour’s dedication to Northern Powerhouse Rail, contrasting it with Reform’s proposed cancellation of the project.
Reeves also committed to securing additional funding through the spending review to ensure timely implementation of the project, stating, “There better be some money committed at the Spending Review. I’m the Chancellor, I’m telling you there will be.”
