The economy has failed to support the working class for an extended period.

The previous administration prioritized disorder and uncertainty over enhancing living standards. They opted against investing in transportation infrastructure such as trains, buses, and roads, as well as in clean energy and future job opportunities. Neglecting investments in schools, hospitals, and communities has hindered economic growth.

Residents in the North have experienced the severe consequences of inadequate investment, a fact I fully comprehend from my 16-year tenure as a Leeds Member of Parliament.

I recently announced a significant investment in Northern rail infrastructure, the most substantial in a generation. This initiative, in collaboration with local leaders, aims to revolutionize transportation in the region.

Northern Powerhouse Rail is set to revolutionize travel by connecting major cities like Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York with faster and more frequent services. The improved services will extend to Newcastle, Hull, and other destinations.

Currently, individuals in Liverpool have limited access to fast trains to Manchester, with long travel times to Manchester Airport despite the short distance. Similarly, residents of Leeds face challenges reaching the city center quickly due to inadequate mass transit options.

The lack of efficient transportation not only causes inconvenience but also hinders economic progress, affecting jobs, businesses, and families in the North. The new investment aims to enhance commutes, connectivity, and quality time with family by building upon previous actions taken.

Previous measures included freezing rail fares for the first time in three decades and maintaining the £3 bus fare cap to maximize the disposable income of individuals. Properly connecting Northern cities is crucial to unleashing their economic potential.

The North boasts thriving sectors such as Manchester’s tech industry, Leeds as a financial hub, Sheffield’s advanced manufacturing, Liverpool’s life sciences, and Newcastle’s leadership in clean energy. Elevating productivity in the North to the national average could result in a £40 billion annual economic boost.

Past governments have discussed “levelling up” the North without taking substantial actions, while infrastructure deteriorated, leading to talent migration for employment opportunities.

Unlike predecessors, the current government is committed to fulfilling promises and investing in the North’s future. By honoring commitments and focusing on infrastructure development, we aim to revive the North’s historical influence on global rail systems.
