Former Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan has expressed his belief that Ben Stokes will play a crucial role in England’s upcoming Ashes tour to Australia, emphasizing the importance of managing Stokes’ workload effectively.

Stokes was absent from the fifth Test against India at The Oval due to a shoulder injury sustained at Old Trafford, following an extensive bowling stint of 129 overs across seven innings. Vaughan, who led England to Ashes victory in 2005, voiced concerns about the potential impact on England’s performance if Stokes fails to handle his workload better during the tour.

Vaughan highlighted Stokes’ significant contribution as an all-rounder, praising his bowling performance during the recent summer matches. However, he cautioned against overburdening Stokes with excessive responsibilities, citing the risk of injury and the potential negative impact on England’s chances in the series.

The England team’s preparations for the Ashes have faced scrutiny, particularly after a lackluster batting display in the ODI series against New Zealand. Vaughan emphasized the need for England to adapt their aggressive style of play to suit the challenging conditions of Australian pitches, where the Kookaburra ball presents additional difficulties for batsmen.

Vaughan stressed the importance of strategic batting approaches in Australia, warning against reckless shot selection in the initial overs of a Test match. He referenced England’s recent successes away from home under the leadership of coach Bazball, highlighting the team’s evolving playing style that has resonated with fans.

In contrast, Vaughan suggested that the Australian team might lack a similar connection with their supporters, speculating that a strong performance by England in Perth could potentially disrupt the unity within the Australian cricket community.
