Major mobile network providers, such as BT EE, VodafoneThree, and Virgin Media O2, have announced plans to prevent foreign call centers from pretending to be banks in a new effort to combat scams.
These networks have committed to enhancing their infrastructure over the next year to eliminate the capability of foreign call centers to falsify UK numbers, a practice known as number spoofing, where scammers manipulate their caller ID to appear legitimate by disguising their actual phone numbers.
To address this issue, advanced technologies, including AI systems and call tracing tools, will be deployed to identify and block suspicious calls and texts, aiding law enforcement in tracking down scammers nationwide.
Among the companies participating in this initiative are BT EE, Virgin Media O2, VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, Talk Talk, Sky, and Comms Council UK (CCUK).
Recent data reveals that 96% of mobile users base their decision to answer calls on the displayed number, with a significant majority avoiding unknown international calls.
Lord Hanson, the Minister for Fraud, emphasized the government’s commitment to combatting scams, stating that the crackdown on spoofed calls aims to protect the public from fraudulent activities by removing scammers’ tools to deceive people and steal their money.
The minister added that the UK is intensifying its efforts to safeguard individuals and create a hostile environment for scammers to operate within the country.
Individuals are encouraged to report any scams or fraud to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting the Action Fraud website. In Scotland, scams can be reported to Advice Direct Scotland at 0808 164 6000 or through their website, and to Police Scotland at 101 for assistance.
For suspected scam emails, forward them to report@phishing.gov.uk, and for scam text messages, forward them to 7726. Dodgy websites can be reported to the National Cyber Security Centre.
If individuals suspect a scam call, they are advised to disconnect immediately and verify the caller’s details online. It is important never to call back the provided number and to contact the bank promptly if fraud is suspected, utilizing the 159 hotline to connect with the bank.
In cases where passwords are compromised, it is recommended to change them without delay to enhance security.
