On a Sunday morning, residents of Minneapolis gathered at the location where Alex Pretti had been fatally shot by federal agents just a day earlier. Pretti, known as a neighbor and friend, was hailed as a hero for risking his life to protect a woman from the agents’ attack. The site was adorned with numerous floral arrangements, cards, candles, and signs in honor of the 37-year-old ICU nurse.

A heartfelt sign at the forefront expressed, “Alex, we will always remember you. Nurse, Neighbor, Helper, Patriot.” The community mourned around the makeshift memorial, with one woman visibly distraught, expressing a deep sense of connection to Pretti despite not knowing him personally. Emotions were high as people expressed sorrow and fatigue over the tragic incident.

Local activist Nero, prominent in immigration protests, emphasized the community’s resilience and unity in the face of adversity. He declared their unwavering commitment to stand together and seek justice. The somber atmosphere was punctuated by a woman singing Amazing Grace and a man playing a melancholic tune on the saxophone across the street.

Despite the tragedy, life continued in the neighborhood, with Glam Doll Donuts, a local business, remaining open and attracting support from the community and beyond. Mary Jenson, a resident, shared her shock at waking up to the news of Pretti’s death, highlighting the profound impact it had on the community.

Jenson noted that many who gathered at the memorial site had also participated in candlelight vigils the previous night, showcasing their determination and solidarity. She emphasized the community’s ethos of mutual support and expressed confidence that justice would prevail. The outpouring of support and unity served as a source of strength and motivation for the community as they navigate through this challenging time.
